Frozen - Not Your Ordinary Disney Princess Story

"Some people are worth melting for"
- Olaf, the Snowman
Even before I watched it, I've fallen in love with the movie. The music, the song, the lyrics, the dialogue, all have captured my attention in a zap. Though I only caught half a sentence of the song ("For the first time in forever...") and that quote above from the trailer, I was sure it's gonna be good.

And it is.

It breaks the usual formula where the Princess is swept away by Prince Charming, just like Brave did, which I also love.

Well, it still includes some dramas in it to keep the story interesting.
The story is about two Princesses from city of Arendelle. Elsa and Anna are two very close sisters until Elsa's power causes an accident and forces the castle to be locked up and both sisters kept separate from each other. The King of Arendelle encourages Elsa to continue practicing in solitary until she can keep her power under control. "Conceal, don't feel. Be the good girl you always have to be" is what she keeps muttering to herself.

Her solitary practice leaves Anna all alone in the castle with no one to play with. Not knowing the reason why.

In their separation, their parents dies at sea, leaving Elsa to be the Queen.

After Elsa comes of age, the castle is once again opened for the coronation day. Anna is very excited to finally be able to meet people and have real interaction with them. And of course, a chance to find "The One".

On the contrary, Elsa keeps her cool, always keeps her distance from people, afraid that her power may become known and harm her people.

After meeting Hans, the 13th Prince of the Southern Isles, Anna is sure that they are meant to be together. Elsa is flabbergasted when Anna and Hans seeks her blessing for marriage. After only one day. For Godsake.

Well, I kinda agree with Elsa not to give blessing to them, but she looses her control over her power and winter sets indefinitely in the city, when it's supposed to be summer time. She flees to isolation, to keep the rest of the people safe. She doesn't know that winter never leaves with her from Arendelle.

Feels guilty, Anna sets off to look for her sister and persuade her to come back. She meets Kristoff on her quest, and Sven, his reindeer, and Olaf, the Snowman which Elsa built when they were kids. Talking, living snowman, who dreams of living in summer. Gosh. "Someone has to tell him!". I agree.
The rest of the story is a pretty typical adventure to save the Princesses. Anna gets struck on the heart accidentally by Elsa, and is dying slowly, freezing to death. Only an act of true love can save her.

Everybody thinks of Hans and True Love's Kiss. But Hans is only after her Kingdom. Ha. Strike off Prince Charming from the list. And True Love's Kiss.

Elsa, who's facing death penalty after Hans one-sidedly declares himself the ruler of Arendelle, runs away from the prison and is distressed after hearing the false news of her sister's death. Hans is on her tail, ready to swing his sword to kill her, only to be stopped by Anna who turns to ice.

All is calm momentarily and time seems to stop. Then, a crack grows on the ice-Anna, until she comes back to life. Overjoyed, Elsa has an epiphany that love is all she needs to keep her power under control. Summer comes back to Arendelle and Olaf has his own personal snow to keep him frozen. Hans is deported. Power comes back to Queen Elsa. All is in order.

While still keeping the old remedy, love, in the mix, Frozen interprets it in the simplest and closest to real life.

There are several points that I learnt from this movie.

You don't need to hold yourself back just because you're different. Who cares about what other people think of you. Be yourself and express it freely.

You don't need a Prince Charming to find your true love. In fact, the one/s worth melting for might be sitting with you around your dining table during breakfast/dinner everyday. You just don't realise it. Yet.

The truest act of love is not a kiss. It's sacrifice. Even our God practices it. He sacrificed His only Son to save us. Jesus sacrificed His life so that we can gain life in Him.

And women, who says you need man to complete you? You can stand on your own feet with the strength within you to rise up high. I say, beware of Prince Charming. They might not be charming in and out. Not only women who need to be pretty in and out, guys.

I hope there are more Disney movies just like this in years to come. It's time to change the trends of fairytale.
